Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Monday that the occupation of 20% of the country’s territory remains the main obstacle to restoring diplomatic relations with Russia, adding that Georgia was ready to discuss the matter if this barrier were removed.
Asked about the possibility of resuming diplomatic relations with Moscow, Kobakhidze said Georgia’s position was clear, while underscoring the importance of maintaining and strengthening communication channels with Russia.
“Our position on diplomatic relations is clear. Unfortunately, there is a specific obstacle to restoring these relations. If this obstacle no longer exists, we are naturally ready to discuss the matter. However, the obstacle remains to this day, and it is the occupation of 20% of our country’s territory”, the Prime Minister said.
Kobakhidze also described the appointment of Giorgi Zurabashvili as the Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Relations with Russia as a significant step.
“Our goal is to strengthen our communication channels. We are working in various areas, including trade and economic issues, as well as humanitarian matters. I would like to note that Mr. Giorgi Zurabashvili has already started working very effectively, and efforts in this direction will continue”, he said.
The Prime Minister added that managing relations with Russia was a matter of state responsibility, expressing confidence that the ongoing efforts would yield tangible practical results.
